ABSTRACT

The management of early prostate cancer is controversial. Radical prostatectomy is widely used, but its effect on the course of the disease has not been proven in a randomized trial. Earlier observational studies have indicated a lower rate of progression in patients treated by surgery than in cases treated by external radiation, but no gain in overall survival at long-term follow-up compared with watchful waiting. Systematic review of available studies reveals a lack of reliable data to support any specific treatment recommendations1-7.
