ABSTRACT

References Podophyllins are a crude extract of cytotoxic chemicals obtained from the common plant Podophyllum peltatum (mandrake or May apple) and Podophyllum emodi. It is a lipidsoluble compound that causes tissue necrosis and is commonly used in the treatment of genital warts. The exact mechanism of action is uncertain. It is known to arrest cell division, and cause cell death.1 Podofilox, also called podophyllotoxin (Condylox), is a purer, more active, and stable form of podophyllin. Podophyllins have been widely used for condyloma treatment since the 1940s.2 Currently, the drug is routinely used as both a patientadministered home treatment and a physicianapplied treatment in the surgery.
