ABSTRACT
The distribution of this old population is quite different among the cantons. Basel city has 20.09% of its population over 65 years old, whereas the canton of Zoug has only 10.95%. The high concentration of old people in urban areas is also another characteristic of the ageing population in the country (d'Epinay et al, 1998). In 2000, 43.8% of women and 15.5% of men over 65 years old were living alone (Office Federal de Ia Statistique website).
