ABSTRACT

Demographics A steadily increasing life expectancy, paralleled by a low birth rate in the developed countries, is rapidly and profoundly changing the age pyramid. As most different forms of dementia show a clear age dependency, the number of demented patients will increase exponentially in the years and decades to come. With some time lapse, this will also be seen in many countries with rapid growing economies such as Mexico, India and China. All diagnostic and therapeutic new avenues in the field of dementia have therefore also to be seen in this context.
