Dementia not only affects the person with dementia but it also affects the entire family, with the greatest burden being placed directly on family carers. Research indicates that many aspects of caring for a person with dementia are the same the world over; the majority of carers are women and caring is associated with substantial psychological strain resulting from grief, guilt, anger, embarrassment and loneliness (Prince, 2004; Murray et al, 1999).
