Interaction between sleep and stress in shift workers
A close relationship exists between quality of sleep and the demands of the workplace. Sleep has a number of effects on the speed and efficiency of work performance. Conversely, work takes up most of our waking time and can have a significant influence on both the duration and quality of sleep. Perhaps the two most important effects of aspects of work on sleep experience are the number of hours worked and the amount of stress produced by the job tasks. Additionally, factors such as physical workload may contribute to the overall stress of the job. The effects of these work characteristics on sleep are profound and will be the focus of this chapter.
