ABSTRACT
Local stimulation of vagal polymodal nociceptive afferent nerves (C-fibers) in the respiratory tract results in a series of co-ordinated biological responses aimed at expelling the noxious agents and starting the inflammatory and immune responses. This constellation of events is referred to as neurogenic inflammation and is due to the local release of peptide neurotransmitters stored in terminal varicosities of these nerves.
