Institutional abuse in mental health settings
This chapter will explore survivor perspectives on abuse using accounts drawn from survivors themselves. It will particularly focus on women’s accounts of abuse in the mental health system. Women have been chosen as they are both over-represented within the mental health system and have been shown to be at the blunt end of many psychiatric practices. These include experiencing higher rates of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), higher hospital admissions and less specialist input (Williams et al 1993).
