ABSTRACT

The menopause is a stage in a woman’s life characterized by a series of hormonal changes and clinical alterations, reflecting a decline in ovarian function. The hormonal deprivation which this implies sets off various events related to the normal aging process, putting women into a framework whereby there is a greater risk of suffering certain diseases. For this reason, medicine has been seeking to offer a better quality of life to the older woman, and, as a result, has advanced in its knowledge of diseases and problems arising from hypoestrogenism, focusing attention on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and alternative treatments. Without doubt, this line of research has been the mainstay of current knowledge regarding the menopause. However, it is fundamental to know, in depth, important aspects of a woman’s health such as her life-style and especially her diet.
