At the end of 1991 there were 161 government enterprises (GE) in Israel. Eighty-five GEs were business enterprises (53 per cent of the total) and the rest (76 companies) were non-business companies. In terms of economic activity the weight of the non-business enterprises was negligible. In 1990, GEs employed 75,292 workers; however 99 per cent of them (74,546 workers) were employed by the business GEs and only 1 per cent (66 employees) worked for the non-business GEs.
