Welcome to the ‘sportocracy’: ‘Race’ and sport after innocence
As recent events suggest, we are living today in what I call a ‘sportocracy’. Our world is commonly narrated as being split into two, and all aspects of human interaction are seen as parts of a competition, where two sides are pitted against one another. The current social and political landscape bears this out. The following series of binary couplets may serve as an example: man versus nature, the battle of the sexes, Islam versus Christianity, rich versus poor, Hutu versus Tutsi, the kids versus the adults, Bush versus Kerry, Tamil versus Sinhalese, East versus West, gay versus straight.
