Technologized bodies: Virtual women and transformations in understandings of the body as natural

WithKATE O’RIORDAN

This chapter examines case studies of virtual bodies in popular digital culture including the Visible Human Project, interfaces, avatars, and the Human Genome Projects. By deploying concepts of the natural to read images of female bodies in digital culture, the chapter examines the ontology of the image and body/image relations. The continuous blurring of the divisions between the biological female body and the simulated one are demonstrated in the chapter and it is concluded that the visions of biotechnologies are invested in a parallel physical reductionism to those of popular digital culture.
