ABSTRACT

DNA profiling is a major advance in individual identification. Traditional individuality testing has employed indirect methods for gene typing in which the chemical products of genes are detected. From the resulting phenotype, the likely genotype is deduced. With the advent of DNA technologies, it is now possible to directly determine an individual’s true genotype by typing the genes themselves. This dispenses with the need to deduce likely genotypes from the phenotype, and maximizes the potential for individualization.
