The feasibility of any new medical practice can never alone dictate its ethical permissibility. It is envisaged that genetic research will enable previously inconceivable and revolutionary procedures, such as the conferring of resistance to major infectious diseases through manipulation of the germ-line, to become feasible, and early deliberation on anticipated ethical problems in determination of its moral defensibility should be paramount in advance of implementation.
