ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Recent advances in sensing systems promise to revolutionize the way in which bridge safety and performance are monitored. Correct deployment of sensing systems can ensure that timely actions be taken to prevent the effects of man-made or natural hazards, and can lead to the development of a new generation of bridge management systems. As is often the case with new and emerging technology, early applications of sensing systems to bridge engineering are in the form of prototype systems, or in the technology demonstration stage. This paper provides an overview of some current efforts in the development and deployment of sensing systems for bridges. Challenges and opportunities associated with sensor networks and their effective deployment on bridges are examined, and a number of important conclusions are presented and discussed.
