This chapter considers the relationship between pain and heterosexual femininity in the context of women’s ice hockey. Heterosexuality and pain are commonly understood as natural phenomena rather than as discursively shaped and constituted. Here, I explore the latter perspective. In exploring the discursiveness of pain, I suggest that essentializing and universalizing ways of understanding pain are politically problematic and reductive.
