ABSTRACT

The ideal treatment for arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) would achieve immediate obliteration while minimizing the risks of morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, this ideal cannot yet be achieved for all patients. The marked heterogeneity of cerebral AVMs and the various advantages and disadvantages of the available treatment modalities necessitate a cooperative multidisciplinary approach by the vascular neurosurgeon, radiosurgeon, and interventional neuroradiologist. The overall treatment strategy is tailored to each patient on the basis of the patient’s condition and the anatomy of the AVM. Because of this multidisciplinary approach, future developments of endovascular techniques will occur in conjunction with future developments in neurosurgical and radiosurgical techniques.
