The study

This chapter examines qualitative data from an ESRC-funded research project on migration behaviour and decision-making among young people in rural Scotland,1 in which, apart from revisiting previous research which found that the more educationally gifted tended to migrate away in order to get on, we also wanted to explore why others, including some with educational ability, stayed in the area. The data reported here come from follow-up personal interviews in 1995 with forty-five young people, all originally from the same school year cohort and all aged approximately 23 years. All were in the final compulsory school year in secondary schools in the Scottish Borders in 1988: seven years later, some were still in the area and some had migrated away.
