ABSTRACT

Genomic science and technology have brought us to the brink of being able to describe the genetic blueprint and molecular evolutionary history of the human species. But wewill not be able to fully interpret these data in isolation. This is one of the reasons the Human Genome Project has, from its inception, included the study of so-called model organisms whose biology, experimental advantages, and smaller, simpler genomes have provided not only important biological insights but also steppingstones for technological development.
