ABSTRACT

To date, four randomized trials of endovascular treatment compared with carotid endarterectomy for carotid artery stenosis have been reported. The first trial of carotid stenting was a single center study based in Leicester, England (41). All patients were symptomatic and had severe (70-99%) stenosis. The trial was stopped after 23 patients had been randomized to treatment (although only 17 patients had received their allocated treatment). Ten carotid endarterectomies proceeded without complication, but five of the seven patients who underwent stenting had a stroke at the time of the procedure.
