ABSTRACT

Over the last decade, advances in anal imaging have had a signi¢cant impact on the management of patients with anal disorders, particularly in the investigation and treatment of peri-anal sepsis and anal incontinence. This chapter will detail the basic anatomy of the anal canal and describe the imaging appearances of the anal canal using two main techniques, endoanal ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, after which practical applications in both incontinence and sepsis will be considered.
