ABSTRACT

In view of the escalation of dengue infections, particularly dengue haemorrhagic fever, since 1953, it would seem possible that dengue may come to rival malaria as the major vectorborne disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that worldwide 267 million people are ill with malaria and two million die from it each year (WHO 1992). Four million infants and children die each year from diarrhoeal diseases, largely due to contaminated food and water.
