Although the Greek foundation sector does not command the large resources of some of its European counterparts, it has over time made some critical contributions in social service provision, education, culture and development. Greek foundations feel that they primarily serve the purposes of complementarity, redistribution, the preservation of culture and the promotion of pluralism. Most of the foundation representatives interviewed for this study supported either a liberal democratic or a social democratic vision of state-society relations. Moreover, Greek foundation representatives are generally satisfied with the types of roles their foundations play. Their hope for the future is that they can build on, and improve what they are doing already.
