Concluding remarks

This study has made some preliminary moves in a certain socio-genetic research direction, although I am aware that that direction – which to some will smack of sociologism and developmentalism – is likely to put off a lot of people or demand of them sociological commitments which they are not prepared to make. The inquiry has abandoned the philosophical mode of thinking and all its traces in sociology for the uncharted waters of a work-in-progress dynamic sociological paradigm in which the issues previously raised by philosophers are in the course of being redefined and reframed. At this early stage, at any rate, when the shape and thread of the new direction – even after two centuries of sociological endeavour – is still only dimly perceived, the ultimate explanatory and liberatory potential embodied in the preliminary inquiries carried out here in its name, may not always be apparent.
