Marx's theory of knowledge as a partial breakthrough
In everyday usage, the opposition between theory and practice is used in constructions such as: in theory everyone should have a television licence, but in practice not everyone has. Or: in theory there is equality of opportunity, but in practice there is inequality of condition. The terms are also commonly used to refer to the body of principles of proper procedure in a profession, trade or craft, as opposed to their practical application. A preliminary glance at these meanings in English reveals two important features which will be relevant to the later discussion.
