Ritualism of Family Life in Soviet Central Asia: The Sunnat (Circumcision)
Although the Soviet Union has created a uniform social and political system for all its citizens, the USSR's multinational and multicultural character is clearly represented at subnational level. The All-Union level, being a supra-national ideological ideal, is only to some degree visible at the national level. Local modes either adapt themselves to the symbols of Soviet identity or parallel them. Thus, generalised Soviet symbolism and ritual is particularly concerned with the political-ideological sphere, work morality and social morality. These are instruments by which Soviet society seeks to integrate all its citizens. In contrast, rituals of life cycle, family and community are elements of subnational expression.
