Musical Change in Herat during the Twentieth Century

In the 1930s the urban music of Herat, in western Afghanistan, started to undergo a remarkable change. Whereas in the early part of the century the Persian style was the dominant type of music played in Herat, the 1930s saw the adoption of a quite different form of art music from Kabul, which was in turn inspired by the example of North Indian (Hindustani) music.
