ABSTRACT

Madeba stands on rising ground in the middle of a plain where many battles have been fought; the town does not show any remarkable feature with its flat roofs like those of any Eastern village. To north of the hill on which the modern town has been built on the old foundations is another on which are some ruins, the outstanding object being a pair of pillars surmounted by an architrave. These pillars are popularly known as " el Masnaqah Abu Rok-the gallows of Father Rok, who was a Sheikh reputed to have administered justice there. Although Madeba does not present any special feature of interest from the outside, and is more remarkable for the charm of die sylvan scene than for anything impressive about its architecture, it is extremely interesting when you penetrate inside.
