ABSTRACT
Another assertion that is frequently made, appears rather arbitrary, namely, that Gerasa was built on a fresh site. It is very unlikely that such an excellent site, by running water, a site of all others to attract people living in a waterless land, should have remained unoccupied; there are various theories concerning a former city here, but as there are no remains of pre-Roman buildings it is a question that need not detain us.
