INFLUENCE OF JEWISH FOLKLORE ON THE JEWISH RELIGION
Superstition is older than religion, Folklore is older than Faith, just as the worship of idols is older than the worship of God. But the triumph of religion does not necessarily mean the crushing defeat of superstition, nor must monotheism be considered as the successor of paganism and polytheism, for neither paganism nor polytheism is dead. The three monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, are overflowing
with pagan beliefs and p~actices, with imaginings absolutely irreconcilable with monotheism. Superstitions have, to a certain extent, been relegated to the background, but they have not been eliminated. They prevail among all races and in all climes, and their sway is unlimited.
