ABSTRACT

The preceding chapters have concentrated on a number of elements related to rugby and masculine identity. While several of the chapters have alluded to, or briefly discussed, the role of politics, this chapter explores the links between politics, sport and struggles over hegemonic masculinity in South Africa and New Zealand during the period when the issue of sporting boycotts developed. As with sport, politics has been one area of society overwhelmingly dominated and shaped by men, with women struggling to gain equal access and rights. The links between politics and sport are undeniable, as are both their links to masculine identity, especially at the national and international levels.
