Why is terrorism so common in free and democratic societies? In this article, using the United States from 1954 to the present as a case study, two alternative explanations for why democratic politics lead to social violence are examined. One view is that citizens resort to violence because their views and interests are ignored by politicians. The other view is that politicians by ‘pandering to extremists’ incite them to violence.
