Dance/Movement Therapy

ByIrma Dosamantes-Beaudry

The creative arts therapies’ field encompasses arts-based therapies (art therapy, dance therapy, drama therapy, music therapy, and poetry therapy) that initially emerged in this country during the 1960s. Although each of these creative art therapies gradually acquired its own unique professional identity because of the unique art medium that it used, all shared certain assumptions about the use of arts media as therapy: (1) that arts’media could be used by trained creative arts therapists as therapeutic modalities and (2) that the creative therapeutic process that was set into motion by creative arts therapies could promote self-generativity, self-integration, and communal transformation (Landy, 1997; Dosamantes-Beaudry, 2003).
