No Free Lunch: Grant Adventures in the Digital Frontier

Milton Friedman may have been thinking of grant funding when he said, “there is no free lunch.” Indeed, most grants have restrictions on how the award can be used, but these limitations are generally well defined in the application instructions and are no surprise to anyone involved in the grant process. Unfortunately, experience also shows that there can be other, unexpected surprises associated with grant funding. Even the best planned grant-funded projects can run into unanticipated problems and roadblocks, particularly if the endeavor is to work with content that is not controlled by the award institution.
