Changing Societal Needs: Changing How We Think About Curriculum and Instruction

The first part of this chapter presents a broad view of problems with schooling in our nation today. Dramatic societal changes along with research from a variety of sources compel educators to rethink traditional school practices to ensure a high quality of life for all citizens. New practices must derive from a vision of learning appropriate for the 21st century.
