THE ROLE OF EMPLOYERS IN THE LABOUR MARKET
Those responsible for recruitment in employing organizations effectively act as gatekeepers to the labour market. They are able to structure the entry to work and to constrain movement within the labour market by virtue of their control over the recruitment process. Their particular requirements must be met before individuals are able to gain access to jobs. This chapter will focus on the part played by employers in determining the distribution of job opportunities, the constraints under which employers operate in exercising control over that distribution, and their attitudes towards the employment of unemployed people.
