Effective leadership and management are considered essential for the development and sustainability of an effective organisation (Long 2011). Today’s medical schools are complex, adaptive organisations (Glouberman and Zimmerman 2002) that are measured on their effectiveness at fulfilling multiple functions: creating world-class healthcare practitioners; employing and developing worldclass faculty; demonstrating expertise in research, teaching and service; maintaining a national and international perspective; and having to succeed in creating a financially stable and increasingly unique and recognised institution.
