In Chapter 1, 23 megacities with populations in excess of 10 million were identified, there are a further 30 with populations greater than seven million (UN, 2011). More than two-thirds of these megacities are coastal (Plate 6) and 80 per cent have a coastal influence. By 2025 the population in megacities in the coastal zone is expected to increase from 220.7 million to 301.7 million people (UN, 2010). These cities are experiencing growth at a rapid rate, above that of other urban areas (Seto et al., 2011).
