The ‘Better Germany’? Urban Planning, Transport and Pedestrian‐Friendly Devices in East Germany
At the end of the Second World War, East Germany was under the control of the Soviet Union. Under its domination a communist government, the German Democratic Republic (GDR), was formed in 1949. The changes made were drastic. The farmers were brutally forced into collective farming. Production in East Germany was mainly geared toward promoting industrial output and not consumer goods that were urgently needed. Hence living conditions in the East were grim compared to West Germany.
