Traffic calming has taken off nearly everywhere in the world in ways which no one could have predicted. It started in the Netherlands as discussed in Chapter 4 and was copied from there and adopted in Germany, and came via both countries to the UK during the 1980s. It fell on fertile ground because Britain had its own history of traffic calming.
