ABSTRACT

Treatment of historical aspects of hydrogeology in relation to German speaking nations in Central Europe appears rather neglected in the professional literature. This refers particularly to textbooks although most of them contain short remarks on early researchers and on historical evolution of hydrogeological sciences in this area. Only Matthess & Ubell (1983) have devoted a short paper to the “History of Hydrogeology’’ (literally). From this it is derived that ideas and contributions by German or German speaking authors emerged first in the 15th/16th Century, for example by F. Faber, G. Bauer (Agricola), C. von Megenberg and others.
