The story told in this chapter derives from my experience of carrying out research on the divided island of Cyprus. I set out to explore the way the experiences of students and teachers are shaped by the diversity of their classrooms. Conducting research within my own cultural context, especially when this is characterized by political and social turbulences, I was often confronted with beliefs and views that I criticized, but at the same time shared, as a member of the particular group.
