ABSTRACT

T his chapter is concerned with how neural imaging might inform the development of an intelligent tutoring system. Bill Chase was one of the subjects in the research on development of programming skills in LISP (Anderson, Farrell, & Sauers, 1984) that led to the development of cognitive tutors (Anderson, Conrad, & Corbett, 1989; Anderson et al., 1995). During this early work on skill acquisition the first author (JRA) remembers many conversations with Bill about what the neural basis might be of skill acquisition. It would have been great to still have him as a colleague to discuss the current research.
