As just one example, recent preclinical research from our laboratory has shown that extinction is a far more dynamic process across the lifespan than previously appreciated. Specifically, while rats of all ages exhibit extinction of learned fear, the neural circuits and neurotransmitters mediating that inhibition of fear differ depending upon the animal’s age.
