ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the recent technological developments, as well as ways in which education is being reconceived. It ensures that readers from any part of the mobile learning community and any part of the e-learning community globally have the necessary background to appreciate and understand the subsequent more specialised contributions. The chapter discusses the significance of context and learning in the context of the dynamics between widespread mobile technology and societal change, specifically in the nature of epistemology, arguing that the apparently stable dichotomy between the learner and his or her context is increasingly fluid and fragmented. Clough's theoretical framework is a constructivist one, used for assessing meaningful learning with technology and providing an understanding of how context-awareness has influenced informal learning activities. The chapter also draws together the themes of the earlier individual contributions.
