ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on organisational barriers for scaling up mobile learning solutions in security and defense organisations. Four challenges for adopting and implementing mobile learning have been identified by prior research. The first challenge is strongly based on the characteristics of the professional work in security and defense organisations. The second addresses the legal frameworks and operational regulations of security and defense organisations. The third challenge refers to the practical implications of applying mobile learning in educational practise. The final challenge addresses the need for mobile learning content. The chapter makes a suggestion that mobile learning cannot be reduced to translating conventional advanced distributed learning (ADL) solutions for the delivery on mobile devices. Sensors that are integrated into mobile devices, such as GPS receivers, and near field communication (NFC) readers, identify the learner's location. Mobile learning orchestration systems with an explicit context model and rules for context matching are implemented as context-aware systems.
