ABSTRACT
In these enlightened days few would claim that Plutarch was in any sense writing history. Now one tends to give full weight to the explicit disclaimer in the Life of Alexander (‘We are not writing history but lives’).1 What commands attention is Plutarch’s illustration of character, his manipulation of anecdote and apophthegm in the service of literary portraiture.
