Industrializing West Bengal? A case of institutional stickiness
Introduction Why is West Bengal lagging behind most other states of India with regard to industrial growth ? Clearly a forerunner in respect of industrialization during British India, and even at the onset of India’s independence, the subsequent saga of industrialization in West Bengal (WB) is one of deterioration and decline. So much so, that even with the inauguration of the age of reforms, which seemingly boosted opportunities for economic growth across the states of India, WB has been able to register an economic growth of only 3 per cent or less per annum. That is depressing if one considers that some states like Andhra Pradesh and Gujrat have been able to grow at more than 10 per cent per annum.
