ABSTRACT

The theoretical underpinning of the Nigerian perspective to the human-environment relationship may be viewed and situated in African cosmology, which posits that human beings exist in relation to their environment. African environmental values recognize and accept the interdependency and peaceful coexistence between earth, plants, animals, and humans (Tangwa, 2004). It is the possibility of harnessing this underlying cultural milieu which provides hope and optimism that in Nigeria, despite the current state of its environment, sustainable environmental management is possible, and with it a sustainable future for its inhabitants.
