ABSTRACT

The term ‘community sanction’ is most often associated with other concepts with more or less similar meaning. A broad definition of the term locates community sanctions structurally between custody and other nominal penalties like fines, compensation, etc. (Bottoms, Gelsthorpe and Rex, 2001). What differentiates a community sanction from a custodial penalty is that while the custodial penalty is executed inside a custodial unit the community sanction is executed in the community under the supervision of a penal actor. With this preliminary definition in mind we can begin our journey into what is and what is not a community sanction.
